Color Composition in Photography

Understanding color in photography is very important. Because, this will make a provision for you to create an impression on the photos that you will make.

There are many people out there who are careless in doing color photo editing. Not paying attention to the color composition, thus making the color of the photo unnatural.

Talking about color in photography, before we go any further. It would be nice for us to know what color is?

What is Color?

Color is a certain spectrum contained in a perfect light (white). The identity of a color is determined by the wavelength of the light.

Color is also one of the important elements in a photo. It is human nature to be attracted to this color, because according to psychology, color is known as something that has a high appeal to one's emotions.

For example, when you enter a white room, you feel spacious and peaceful, it's different when you enter a dark black room, it feels quiet, empty, and scary.

In psychology, color can affect a person's mood when they see it. Because color has the magical power to change the mood of someone who sees and feels it.

The Function of Color in Photography

In photography itself, color has an important role to produce photos that attract attention. The function of color in photography is as follows:

1. Attract attention

As explained above, humans will be attracted by color.

Making a good composition in a photo will inevitably invite people to glance at it.

2. Moods

One of the things that can be aroused in humans when they see color is their mood or what is commonly called passion. Each color will evoke a different mood.

An example of a color that can increase a person's mood is when you see blue, your heart will feel calm, peaceful. In contrast to when you see green, your heart will feel fresh, fresh from within you.

How to Make a Photography Color Composition?

Of course, when we have studied the meaning of a color, the function of color in photography. Of course, we also have to know how to make a good color composition in photography.

But all of that returns to each of us. In fact, there is no standard standard. There is no color composition that can be considered as the best or the best compared to the others.

It all depends on your individual tastes when shooting

Even so, there are some simple standards in my opinion that you can apply when you are taking a photo.

1. Use Cool Colors

Cool Colors are colors that can make a person's mood when they see it calm, peaceful, calm, and refreshing.

These colors are blue, green, and violet.

The examples of photos that use these cool colors are like the example below.

2. Use Warm Colors

Warm Colors are colors which can make a person's mood when they see it make their eyes fixed on the object.

Warm colors are red, yellow, orange. Not only about the color that must be considered in photography, but also about the lighting in photography. Because, lighting is one important factor also in photography.

3. Use Complementary Colors

Complementary Colors or usually referred to as complementary colors are combinations of colors which when combined cancel each other out.

In this theory, if an object already has a base color such as orange, then the background color should be its derivative as much as possible, namely blue.

How to Get Attractive Colors in Photography?

1. Use the Right Exposure

Using the right Exposure must always be considered and maintained by a photographer. Because when the photo is over exposure, no matter how detailed the color is, you won't get it.

When you take photos indoors, try not to overexpose the photos or be too under.

2. Set the Right White Balance

White Balance is a camera setting that is often overlooked. When you shoot using jpg mode, then you can't just set this white balance. Because it will cause the color of the photo to be strange.

Know the environmental conditions that you will make the object for the photo.

However, you can adjust the white balance later during post processing, when you use RAW files while shooting.

3. Use RAW Mode when Shooting

It is undeniable that today's digital cameras have the ability to record an image using a digital sensor.

When the sensor is set to record using RAW mode, all raw data recorded will not be thrown away. However, it is stored in the photo file itself

4. Use a Monitor That Has Good Calibration

In photography itself, when playing with color, it must be taken seriously and should not be messed with. If at this time you are still using an mediocre calibration, then for now try to replace it with a stable color calibration.

When you use stable color calibration it will help you in video editing. Because, good calibration will make the photo maximal.

5. Don't Overdo Your Video Editing

For the last one, when you do video editing, my advice is not to overdo it. Try to make sure the main file is ready on the camera, so you can easily edit it in the Photoshop or Lightroom applications.

When excessive in doing photo editing will make the photo seem unnatural.
